The Varsity Mental Health Champions is joining the global movement this day 10 September 2024 to destigmatise mental health discussions through. In observance of this year's World Suicide Prevention Day, we are encouraging all members of the university community and the world at large to start having open conversations around this vitally important issue.
Suicide is a leading cause of death worldwide, with over 700,000 lives lost prematurely each year according to WHO statistics. The Champions note that for each of these tragic losses, there are also countless others deeply affected both emotionally and socially. It is a widespread public health challenge that requires widespread communication and support to adequately address.
Acknowledging this, the global theme for this year focuses on "Changing the Narrative on Suicide" with an aim to reduce stigma through inclusive dialogue. Our on-campus Champions are spearheading this mission at the grassroots level. We call on students and faculty alike to participate in discussions that break down barriers and share appropriate guidance on available assistance options.
Simple check-ins with peers can make a difference for those contemplating suicide. By building a culture of openness and empathy, fewer will have to suffer in isolation. As the Champions we reaffirm our dedication to being approachable resources for any seeking support, emphasizing that hope always remains when we face challenges together rather than apart.
